Victims lose S$156,000 to online scams on fake EZ-Link, SimplyGo promotions: SPF
Please be careful.

In the past month, at least 97 victims have lost S$156,000 to a new social media phishing scam, said the police in a Mar. 28 advisory.
The scam involves social media ads for fake EZ-Link and SimplyGo travel promotions.

How it works: The scammers put up ads and posts on Facebook and Instagram, offering "enticing promotions" such as unlimited travel for S$3.
When victims click on these links, they're redirected to a site with EZ-Link or SimplyGo logos.
They then key in their credit or debit card details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to purchase the EZ-Link cards.
They may also be redirected to participate in online games or quizzes to qualify them for the "promotion", with prizes like free EZ-Link cards.
Here are some examples of ads for fake promotions:

Unauthorised transactions
The victims only realised they were scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions in their bank accounts — sometimes in foreign currencies, SPF said.

In its statement, the police reminded members of the public that all promotions for EZ-Link cards are conducted only on SimplyGo's website, and SimplyGo and EZ-Link's social media pages.
SimplyGo does not offer a "S$3 for unlimited travel" deal.

Members of the public are also reminded to be cautious of attractive deals that seem too good to be true; to call and check the 24/7 ScamShield Helpline at 1799 if unsure of the authenticity of a product or service; and to report any fraudulent transactions or suspicious advertisements.
